Rogers Stirk + Harbor Terminal 5 is still iconic
Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 (T5) at London’s main airport, was built to handle 35 million travelers a year. The architect is Rogers Stirk Harbor & Partners with construction designs by Pascall+Watson and structural engineering from Mott Macdonald and Arup.
All passengers, whether arriving or departing, remain on one level while baggage, climate control, support functions and the management area are below.

Terminal 5 (T5) is the largest freestanding building in the UK at 396m long, 176m wide and 40m high. There are actually four floors all covered in curved steel framing and a glass roof – the size of five football fields, designed to let light stream into the interior. The roof weighs 2,200 tons and is supported by thin columns all around it, creating a neat meeting space free of pillars or abutments. This flexible space allows a freestanding steel frame structure to be placed within the arrivals and departures area which can be moved or reconfigured as requirements change.
