Christmas Snow in Tokyo – Stuck in Customs

Photo of the Day – Christmas Snow in Tokyo

I love all the umbrellas in Tokyo! I got this picture of the two girls giggling while looking at some Christmas decorations as it starts to snow.

Have you noticed how Japanese girls cover their mouths when they laugh? You know why? You will never guess. I’m going to get some details wrong on these dates. Prior to the Meiji period in the late 1800s, women would often die their teeth with black lacquer to indicate maturity or marriage. They often find this embarrassing, so they will cover their mouths when they laugh. Although it stopped 150 years ago, the tradition has continued, passed down by daughters who take care of their mothers from generation to generation.
